Dr. Marie Riemann-Reyher has, on the basis of photographs, confirmed the attribution to Menzel in written correspondence to the current owner. Dr Riemann-Reyher suggests that this landscape may have been executed in the 1870s or early 1880s, on one of the artist's trips to Southern Germany, observing that the dark areas of this composition are most probably drawn with carpenter's lead, a material in which almost all of Menzel's later drawings are executed. Dr Riemann-Reyher also notes that the signature is stylistically comparable with other signed works by the artist.
Landscapes like this are rare in Menzel's work.
