Crucifix

gilt and partially champlevé enamelled copper

20.4cm., 8in.

Sotheby's New York, 27 January 2011, lot 383

The present crucifix was probably made for attachment to the centre of a larger cross. With its applied corpus in high relief, it can be classified according to Paul Thoby's typology as belonging to 'Type II' or 'Gem group'. In this group the figure of Christ, always crowned, is in repoussé copper with enamelled decoration confined to the eyes, the perizonium, and the footrest.
