Pacing Horse

gilt bronze, on an ebonised wood base

bronze: 15.5 by 16.5cm., 6 1/8 by 6½in.

base: 8.5 by 14.5cm., 3 3/8 by 5¾in.

Private collection, Italy
Derived from Fanelli's model of a pacing horse, the present bronze exhibits a stippled surface treatment that is characteristic of late 16th and 17th-century bronzes made in Augsburg. Compare the Animals from a fountain of circa 1570-1590 in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (op. cit., nos. 167-181) and the Leaping Unicorn by Hans Reisinger in the Grünes Gewölbe, Dresden (inv. no. IX 51).
