Captain Pain accompanied Sir Arthur Hesilrige, 7th Bt. (d. 1763) on his Grand Tour in 1723, when they both sat to the famous and fashionable Roman portrait painter, Trevisani. Sir Arthur lived at Noseley Hall, in Leicestershire, which he rebuilt upon returning from his Tour, in part to provide a suitable setting in which all his Italian trophies - including the present portrait and 'many curious antiques'1 - could be housed.
This painting descended in the Hesilrige family until it was bought by the present owner in 1998.
