Based on a composition by Rubens which was part of a commission for a cycle celebrating the Triumph of the Eucharist ordered in circa 1625 by Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), daughter of Philip II. This cycle was used as a design for tapestries that were to decorate the Church of Saint Francis adjacent to the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. The modello for this scene is in the Prado Museum, Madrid;1 the present composition is seen in reverse and must be based on an engraving of the modello.
