Conceived as a tautology and a self-portrait reliquary , this work shows Rashid Johnson’s early involvement with his African roots. A Curator of Modern Art at MoMa and Director of the Guggenheim, James Johnson Sweeney published African Sculpture at Princeton University Press in 1970 following the racial riots of the 60’s in America with a front cover that doesn’t only draw attention on the influence of African art on western avant-gardes but also mimics Minimal Art of the time with an archetypal Dogon mask laid out in a radical design.
