Description
TIGER IRON SLAB
Port Hedland, Western Australia
Paleoproterozoic.
20 x 20 x ¾ inches.
Tiger iron is formed over 2½ billion years from compressed layers of golden tiger's eye, shimmering silver-black hematite, striking red jasper and the oldest of all fossils, algae-derived stromatolite. The gentle curves and waves of the layers bear witness to the immense pressures to which the rock was subject to over the millenniums. This highly polished slab is an excellent example of the distinctive banding, with a rich abundance of shimmering golden tiger's eye.
