Diplomystus dentatus, Phareodus encaustus, Notogoneus osculus,
Mioplosus labracoides, Priscacara serrata, Knightia eocaena
Lower Eocene
Green River Formation, Lincoln County, Wyoming, USA
An uncommonly large and abundant fossil plate measuring 48 ½ x 96 ½ x 2 ½ inches (122.9 x 244.8 x 6.4 cm).
The Green River Formation comprises several basins formed as part of the uplifting of the Rocky Mountains during the Lower Teritary. These 50 million year old outcroppings contain an enormously diverse faunal and floral assemblage of fossils exhibiting remarkable preservation. This superb plaque displays something of that abundance and variety with six of the most famous species present and a total of thirteen fossil fish in all. Collected from the famous “18-inch layer”, where the majority of Green River fossil fish are taken, each of these 13 specimens are virtually complete with only minor touch-up restoration.
