Letter signed as Ferdinand V of Spain ("yo el Rey"), governing in place of his daughter Joanna "the Mad", Queen of Castille, Valladolid, 28 January 1511

granting the Commander Francisco Pérez de Barradas, a nobleman at the Royal Court, farmland equivalent to thirty bushels (fanegas) in Guadix, near Granada, then part of the Kingdom of Castile

Ferdinand and Isabella, known as "Los reyes católicos", are among the most famous Spanish monarchs, having completed the "Reconquista" of the peninsula by driving the Moors from Granada in 1492.  Ferdinand V (1452-1516) reigned as King of Aragon and Castile with his wife Isabella from 1479 until 1504, and alone until his death in 1516. Their daughter Joanna theoretically inherited the crown of Castile, which constituted the major part of the country, when Isabella died in 1504. However, Ferdinand maintained his control over the whole of Spain by having Joanna declared insane and confined to the Royal Palace at Tordesillas. This document is signed by Ferdinand as King, although he is in fact acting as governor of Castile in place of Joanna, exerting power over Granada, which Los reyes católicos had "reconquered" in 1492.
