Description
LISZT, FRANZ
Large lithographed portrait of Liszt in 1846, with an autograph musical quotation signed ("FL")
the music written below the image in brown ink on two staves, a flamboyant pianistic flourish ["Preludio"] comprising five diminished-seventh chords, of which the first four are arpeggiated, notated in 12/16 time with treble and bass clefs,
c.56 x 44.5cm (22 x 17.5 inches), by Höfelich after Kriehuber (dated "[1]846"), Vienna: Pietro Mechetti, [1840s], slight surface loss (to the composer's cloak) and a few indistinct tears in the field, all repaired on verso, overall browning, remains of mount with staining to margins and verso
This is one of the largest inscribed portraits of any composer that we have seen at auction. The music is titled elsewhere "Preludio" (see previous lot and Sotheby's sale 28 May 2015, lot 251) and even as "Prélude omnitonique" (Bonhams, 15 March 2015, lot 84), although Liszt uses the latter title on a number of different albumleaves.
