Description

HOMER

Dell'Iliade di Omero, tradotta in ottava rima da Giacomo Casanova. Venice: Modesto Fenzo, 1775-1778

3 volumes, 4to (249 x 182mm.), woodcut initials and headpieces, list of subscribers in each volume, with final blank in volumes 1 and 3, initial blank in volume 2, T4 missigned T2 in volume 2, 2 engraved maps and a folding engraved plate at the start of volume 3, contemporary carta rustica, UNCUT

Casanova began his translation while visiting the library in Wolfenbüttel, according to his memoirs. A fourth volume was supposed to be published (containing the final 7 books), but it never reached the press, plausibly because of a dearth of subscribers. Many of the annotations to each book are translations from Alexander Pope's influential commentary.
