Satyajit Ray is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Born in Calcutta, he started his career as a commercial artist before being drawn to independent film making.
Ray, a skilled screen writer and author penned many novels and short stories. The current lot is an illustration from his short detective story The Mystery of the Pink Pearl with the lead character Feluda, who also uses the Anglicized name Pradosh C. Mitter. In this story, a rare pink pearl surfaces in a small village and the owner turns to Feluda for protection, against a number of interested parties including the villain of the story, the wily Maganlal Meghraj. In this scene from left to right we see Jatayu, Sayan Mallik Topse, Feluda, Nabajiban Babu. Mr. Mallik is showing the jeweled slipper of Maharishi Debendranath Tagore to the group.
