'This painting by Chen Ting-Shih was the first thing I saw upon entering my office for the past 12 years. I hung this painting behind my desk because I found it very inspirational. Every Monday morning, one or more U.S. State Department International Visitors from countries all over the world would enter my office, and I would proudly explain to them why this painting meant so much to me. My office had been the childhood room of Katherine Graham, the most influential American woman of the late 20th century, the publisher of the Washington Post newspaper. She authorized publication of the Pentagon Papers, which led to the U.S. withdrawal from South Vietnam, and she authorized the Watergate investigations, which led to Nixon's resignation from the U.S. presidency. This painting inspired me to think of her example, to break the bonds of conventional thinking, to try to find new ideas.'
