Exquisitely rendered with a gentle smile and full rounded body, the horse has been further endowed with a certain individuality through the jade stone from which it has been fashioned. Carvers of the Ming period aimed to capture more than the mere physical likeness of subjects, so as to convey their true character.

Compare a gray jade horse plaque fashioned in similar style sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 23rd October 2005, lot 17, and again at Christie's Hong Kong, 4th October 2018, lot 150; another example formerly in the Yen-Lin Shui Ge Collection, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th November 2017, lot 3056; a yellow jade example formerly in the Mary and George Bloch Collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 7th April 2015, lot 3615; and a fourth example sold at Christie's Paris, 11th June 2014, lot 272.

此玉馬表情刻畫豐富,身型圓潤飽滿,匠工因材施藝,將玉石巧色融入雕工之中,賦予其獨特性,可見明朝玉匠除了對玉雕外形的刻畫之外,同時也專注其內在的體現。
