Whyte's, Dublin, 25 November 2013, lot 52

The present work was originally hidden underneath another painting by Jellett called Death of Procris (1929), sold at auction in 2013 (also illustrated in Bruce Arnold, Mainie Jellett and the Modern Movement, 1991, no.150, p.112). Upon the cleaning of Death of Procris, the present painting was discovered which must also date to circa 1929. It relates to Jellett's religious designs, compare for example Abstract Crucifixion (Arnold, op. cit., no.162, illustrated p.116). The colour, stippled brushwork and design are typical of her work from this period.
