In the 1870s and 1880s Philippe Pavy travelled to Spain, North Africa, and Egypt with his brother Eugène Pavy, also an artist. His Orientalist works, which record local life, were met with critical acclaim in England, where Pavy exhibited both at the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Academy in London.
