Frederick Goodall first visited Egypt in 1858 and travelled with fellow artist Carl Haag. Goodall was impressed by the grace of the Egyptian people and the sweeping grandeur of the landscape, which became the central focus of his work.
Here, a lone farmer pauses from his work for evening prayer. The hills beyond are bathed in golden sunlight, a scene which Goodall first described in a diary entry from 1858: 'Towards evening I strolled a short distance to view the range of mountains on the other side of the Gulf. The glorious colour of the hills will never fade from my memory.'
