Father of the Daytona dynasty, the reference 6239 was introduced just over 55 years ago. While it differs in many aspects from the current model, it is telling how this piece has passed through time without never falling out of fashion. This could arguably be explained by the perfect balance between the different components, the highest quality standards combined with a sporty chic twist Rolex injected into the design.
The sporty spirit is enhanced by the Paul Newman chronograph dial. Pieces fitted with this rare dial enjoy an added dimension to the timeless elegance of the Daytona, and the wearer is transported into the vintage racing world.
This dial, preserved in untouched condition, is particularly attractive thanks to its subtle dark tropical patina.
Additionally, the case of the watch has been well-preserved and still retains strong proportions.
Unlike the vast majority of the watches from that period, this piece is presented with its original presentation case and punched guarantee which is stamped NAAFI. The Navy, Army and Air Forces Institutes was created by the British government in 1920 to provide recreational establishments to the Armed Forces and their families. This connection with the British army adds an extra dimension to aura of this highly special piece.
The provenance and NAAFI connection:
Whilst serving as an engineer with the Royal Air Force in Singapore in the late sixties, the original owner participated as a Referee in the station Association Football leagues and as an official in the Inter Service units football leagues throughout Singapore. Although he possessed a sport stop watch, on occasions, he forgot to restart the stop watch after a break in play and had difficulty working out when the match needed to end. To overcome this problem, he decided to purchase a chronograph wristwatch. After researching the various models that met his requirements, he eventually decided to purchase a Rolex Cosmograph wristwatch because the stop, start and reset pushers were much more substantial than on the Omega wristwatch. When placing the order for the Rolex Cosmograph at the NAAFI Shop, he was given the choice between the black and the white dial. He decided to go with the white dial as it was easier to read in the sunlight. The Rolex wristwatch then became his only timepiece for his daily use and when participating in various sporting activities and in his later professional careers.
Sotheby’s is extremely pleased to present this one owner full set tropical Rolex Daytona Paul Newman on the international market on his behalf.
