Named after co-founder Jules Audemars, the present manual winding grande sonnerie showcases the more traditional side of Audemars Piguet. The elegant 39 mm platinum pebble-shaped case conceals the caliber 2891, which boasts the 'Carillon' grande sonnerie function as well as a dynamograph and power reserve indication. Carillon means that the repeating of the quarter hours is done on at least three gongs, thus enhancing the sound of it. The alternations of brushed and polished surfaces to the case contribute to a more modern look while the beautifully crafted movement can be examined via the sapphire crystal display back. This particular example is complemented by an impressive platinum bracelet that brings the watch to a heavy weight of 211 grams.
The Grande and Petite Sonnerie may be selected and muted via the slide at 2 o'clock. Set in the 'GS' (Grande Sonnerie) mode, the watch strikes the exact time while passing at each quarter of an hour. When 'PS' (Petite Sonnerie) is selected, the chiming only occurs at every full hour and when the slide is set to 'S' (Silence), the mechanism will not chime unless the minute repeater is activated by the push-button at 10 o'clock. The 'couple' indicator gives a visual representation of the amount of torque supplied by the mainspring, which in turn helps to determine when the watch needs to be wound in order to maintain the most accurate timekeeping.
