A FRENCH SILVER ETERNAL LIGHT (NER TAMID), LATE 19TH CENTURY


assembled in three sections suspended by three chains with scrolling links, in Baroque taste of baluster form with gadroon and acanthus rim, repoussé floral spray against a matted circular ground, with a similar canopy, the central band and underside with memorial inscriptions

each piece marked with French maker's and guarantee marks, by different makers

length approx. 64 in.

The inscription on the upper ring reads: “In memory of the precious, eminent, wise, discerning Shalom ben Saadon. May his soul be bound up in the Bond of Life.”


The inscription at the base reads: “For kindling the Eternal Lamp [Ex. 27:20]: as a merit for, and in memory of, […]Mr. Samuel Safar, may the spirit of God place him [in the Garden of Eden] and may his soul be bound up in the Bond of Life.”
