each pierced splat back centred by marquetry patera, the frames with trailing husk decoration, with a shaped seat rail and fluted tapering front legs

The attribution to Henry Hill of Marlborough is based on a documented set of nearly identical chairs supplied to Thomas Mansel at Penrice Castle, Glamorgan, in 1778 (illustrated Lucy Wood, The Upholstered Furniture in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Volume II, Singapore, 2008, p. 628, fig. 394). The present chairs are identical to a set of three chairs in the Lady Lever Art Gallery (LL 4308-4310) and it is conceivable they once formed part of the same suite (see Wood, op. cit., p. 627).
