Description

THE PROPERTY OF AN ENGLISH GENTLEMAN

A PAIR OF ANDO CLOISONNÉ VASES, ANDO STUDIO MARK

MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY

the oviform vases in various thicknesses of gold wire and wireless coloured cloisonné enamels with peony spray beneath a snow covered yukitsuri, the other with a bird in snow-covered camellia branches, with shakudo mounts

(2)

48 cm, 19 1/8 in. high (with fitted box)

The vases 38.5cm, 15 1/8 in. high

The inside of the lid provides the name and seal of Ando Jubei. The side of the tomobako has the rare inscription reading “Meiji Tenno GyoButsu”, a most formal and archaic way of stating that they were formerly owned by the Emperor Meiji. The lower area of this side notes that the inheritor of the pair was Prince Nashimoto, son of Prince Fushimi and a nephew of the Emperor Meiji.
