Description

Property from the Eric C. Caren Collection

(WASHINGTON, GEORGE)

George Washington's Second Presidential Inauguration reported in the Gazette of the United States, Vol. IV, No. 80 (Whole No. 402). Philadelphia: Published by John Fenno, Wednesday, March 6, 1793

Folio, 4 pages (16 7/8 x 10 3/8 in.; 426 x 268 mm) on a full sheet of laid paper, preserving deckle on all margins, text in four columns; short separation at central fold, very minor soiling, disbound. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot.

"I, George Washington, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States; and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Under the headline "Oath of Office, administered to the President of the United States," Fenno's "national paper" gives a brief overview of the "solemn ceremony" taking place for just the second time. The oath was administered by Associate Justice William Cushing on March 4. Washington's Inaugural Address is described as "a short, but comprehensive speech."
