A rare War of Jenkins’ Ear broadside, issued by the Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay

"Whereas His Majesty, upon wise and just Consideration, hath declared War against the King of Spain, and hath likewise been pleased to appoint a Day for publick Fasting and Humiliation, to be observed throughout the Kingdom of Great-Britain, to implore the Blessing and Assistance of Almighty GOD on His Majesty's Arms, and for restoring and perpetuating Peace, Safety and Prosperity to himself and his Kingdoms..."

The present broadside was a proclamation set forth by Governor Jonathan Belcher for a day of fasting and prayer in light of the war against the Spanish. For more than a decade, Jonathan Belcher served simultaneously as colonial governor of the British colonies of New Hampshire (1729–41) and Massachusetts (1730–41), and later as governor of New Jersey (1747–57).
