ROBERTS, DAVID
EGYPT AND NUBIA. LONDON: F. G. MOON, 1846-1849
3 volumes, folio (23 5/8 x 17 1/4 in.; 601 x 438 mm), 3 lithographed pictorial titles, 61 tinted lithographic plates and 60 half-page illustrations by Louis Haghe after Roberts, paper guards, engraved map; preliminary leaves of vols. 1 & 3 re-margined (frontis., engraved title, vignette description, introduction of vol. 1), scattered minor thumb-soiling to vol. 2, marginal repairs to vol. 1 frontis. (not affecting image), spotting to upper portion of vol. 1 engraved title and 3 plates only, marginal tear to 1 plate, else an exceptionally clean copy. Contemporary green morocco gilt, gilt dentelles and edges, marble endpapers; rebacked retaining the original spines, a bit rubbed and scuffed.
An unusually fine copy of Roberts' monumental representation of the Near East — "the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph"
"Haghe's skillful and delicate lithography, and his faithful interpretation of Roberts's draughtsmanship and dramatic sense, combine in what are undoubtedly remarkable examples of tinted lithographic work... one feels that the colossal subjects and broad vistas were ideally suited to Roberts's talent, trained as he was in theatrical scene-painting" (Abbey).
