Description
MILTON, JOHN
THE DOCTRINE & DISCIPLINE OF DIVORCE. LONDON, 1644 [BOUND WITH:] THE JUDGEMENT OF MARTIN BUCER CONCERNING DIVORCE... LONDON: MATTHEW SIMMONS, 1644
Small 4to (185 x 140 mm). Title spotted with old owner's signature in ink, small worm hole in middle of pages, but most often between lines of text so not intruding, general browning and a few contemporary marginal notes. Modern calf to style, red lettering piece.
Milton's rare divorce tracts, whose suppression inspired Areopagitica
This 1644 edition is nearly double the length of the first edition from earlier the same year. The second work is a translation by Milton of "De coniugio et divortio" from "De regno Christi" and contains the leaf of "Postscipt" often lacking.
Both works are very scarce. The last complete copy we can find of the first at auction was in 1964.
