8vo (165 x 102mm.), FIRST EDITION, frontispiece, vignette title-page and 11 other illustrations by Maclise, Doyle, Leech and Stanfield, second state of the vignette title with Chapman and Hall centred at foot of page, lacking colon and comma on imprint page, advertisement for tenth edition of A Christmas Carol, pale yellow endpapers, original deep red horizontally-ribbed cloth, covers with decorative border stamped in blind, that on the upper cover enclosing a central gilt pictorial title design, spine gilt, all edges gilt, lacking front free endpaper, recased preserving original backstrip, spine and corners rubbed with some loss of cloth
Charles Dickens' second 'Christmas Book', written with an expressly political and moral purpose to shame the rich and shine a spotlight on the dire conditions of the poor, attacking the complacency of the judiciary and landowners.
