The special Christmas Numbers comprise What Christmas is as We Grow Older; A Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire; Another Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire; The Seven Poor Travellers; The Holly-Tree Inn; The Wreck of "The Golden Mary"; The Perils of Certain English Prisoners; A House to Let; The Haunted House; A Message from the Sea; Tom Tiddler's Ground; Somebody's Luggage; Mrs Lirriper's Lodgings; Mrs Lirriper's Legacy; Doctor Marigold's Prescriptions; Mugby Junction; No Thoroughfare.
These were the Christmas Numbers from the two periodicals as issued by Chares Dickens. Many were written by him, others by Wilkie Collins, George Sala, Mrs Gaskell, Rosa Mulholland and others. Originally published in the periodicals they were first issued separately in parts with advertisements, those from Household Words unbound and from All the Year Round in blue printed wrappers. A bound volume of the Household Words numbers was issued in 1859 and both were reissued around the time of Dickens' death in 1870.
