Brianchon’s aesthetic harks back to the startling color combinations and sense of intimacy that can be found particularly in the work of Nabis artists such as Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. He and his wife traveled to the United States for the first time in 1959 for a New York show arranged by David Findlay, who exhibited thirty of Brianchon’s works painted between 1942 and 1959 including the present lot. In 1960, Findlay held a second solo show for the artist and in the Fall of that year the gallerist and dealer Georges Wildenstein arranged an exhibition of over 100 works of his in Paris.
