A CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF A MYTHICAL BEAST
QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY
the mouth agape to form a shallow receptacle
Length: 6 in. (15.3 cm.)
Michael Gillingham, London
This fantastical creature reflects the Chinese sculptural tradition of mythical 'chimera' or 'qilin' and combines the head of a dragon, the horns of a ram, a scaled body of a deer and the hooves of a horse. Such beasts first appeared in Chinese art in the form of small jade carvings during the Han dynasty (206 BC - 221 AD).
