Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 6 November 2001, lot 86;

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 27 October 2015, lot 553, where acquired by the present owner.

The present work is most likely a copy or variant of a lost Beuckelaer original, with the left half of the picture being repeated in other various works linked to the artist. The motif of the figures are discussed by Paul Verbraeken in the catalogue to the 1986 Ghent exhibition on Beuckelaer.1 We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
