In 2017, the young Hong Kong artist Kila Cheung left for Japan to begin his internship away from home. The move inspired his Home series which began with the present lot, a heartwarming sculptural assemblage. Head like the sun and body of an island, the carved wooden figure is seated on a cabinet made by a local Japanese artisan. Opening the cabinet drawers reveals a pencil drawing of the figure likened to a lighthouse centered in a vast sea, as well as a key from a Hong Kong Locksmith. A cathartic creation expressing his longing for home, the present work acts as a reminder of the warmth from the sunlit island where his family resided and a token of encouragement on his new venture.

Winner of the esteemed Young Design Talent Award 2016 and the Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards 2019, Kila had worked with numerous international brands to lend his artistic talents, including UNIQLO, IKEA, Kiehl’s, Cathay Pacific Airways and Prudential. His recent exhibitions include his solo shows Teens in Sunroom at The Little Hut Gallery, Taipei and Twinkle Twinkly Little Guys at Gallery by the Harbour, Hong Kong.

生於香港的章柱基於2017年離開香港，前赴日本進行離家生活一年的研修計劃。離鄉別井的歷練，成就了「家」系列的誕生，而本作則是該系列的第一件創作。太陽般的腦袋，島嶼似的身軀，木雕坐落在日本的工藝木櫃子上。拉開頂方抽屜，隱藏其中是一幅鉛筆繪畫，當中的木雕如燈塔般屹立汪洋中央，而底下抽屜則附有從香港鎖匠所得的鑰匙。對章柱基而言，這件作品是一解思鄉之情的渠道，作品刻畫了他家的輪廓，呈現了家鄉在其腦海心中明媚溫暖的印象，並以座標般的形態，對正在邁步人生新一頁的藝術家作激勵鼓舞。

Kila於2016年榮獲香港設計青年才俊獎，並於2019年贏得香港出版雙年獎。Kila曾受邀與不同國際品牌合作，如：UNIQLO、宜家家私、Kiehl's、國泰航空、英國保誠等。近年的個人展覽包括台北The Little Hut 畫廊舉辦的「日光室少年」以及香港海港城·美術館舉辦的「一閃一閃小工程」。
