In an interview with arts critic Richard B. Woodward, David Levinthal commented: 'I was born in 1949 and I'm part of that generation that grew up with television as more than just a novelty. It was omnipresent. . . I think my "Wild West" series reflects the pervasiveness of the Western myth during that time on television. . . It was from Saturday afternoon television. During the '50s, half of the top-rated shows were Westerns. They still had serials in those days. Or look at the toys in Sears catalogs from the '50s, with page after page of holster sets--Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, and the generic ones. The television culture was very important to me' (quoted in David Levinthal: Work from 1975-1996, p. 106).
