"I handled color as a man should behave. You may conclude that I consider ethic and aesthetics as one". Josef Albers cit. in K.Kuh, The artist'a voice, p. 11-12

On the contrary, the distinctive trait of every Homage to the Square is not in the aseptic conformity to a rule, but in the magnetic energy which it irradiates, in the evocative force, in the honesty and the authenticity that has been conferred to it by the moral rigor of its creator and by his profound respect for art as an eminently human activity, from which the growth of the individual and the development of society depend on.

Marco Pierini, A spiritual documentation of life, in Josef Albers, Modena, Galleria Civica di Modena e Palazzina dei Giardini, 2011-2012, exhibition catalogue, p. 32
