“Those of Maria Lai are pages that are to be touched with the eyes, to be caressed with the mind, because the artist respects the ‘secrets’, as she would call them, of the small volume, being it closed in every sense. Even in this case her works show an amphibious aspect: on one side an autobiographical memory is born (the grandmother’s mending, the knitwork of the women of her native lands), on the other she inserts a riverbed of research that goes from the historical avant-gardes  to the neo-avant-gardes which finds in the book a fundamental subject”.
