LAWRENCE, T.E.

SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. NEW YORK: DOUBLEDAY DORAN, 1926

8vo, first American edition (copyright edition), NUMBER 7 OF 22 COPIES, SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER GEORGE DORAN, 11 illustrations in the text, initials after Edward Wadsworth and Blair Hughes-Stanton, footnote on p. 257 printed in red, ornamental initials, original half vellum, blue paper-covered boards, morocco label on spine with title in gilt, top edge gilt, the others uncut, blue endpapers, very slight edge-wear to covers with a few tiny stains

This American edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, omitting the plates and some of the illustrations, and with some variations, was printed in New York from proofs of the Subscribers' edition, in order to secure American copyright. It was limited to just 22 numbered copies, of which 6 were for Lawrence, 2 for the Library of Congress, 4 for the publisher Doran, and 10 for sale, all at exorbitant prices ($20,000 or more), to deter them ever being sold. Doran exhibited the notionally 'for sale' copies in various leading bookshops across the country to promote the American edition of Revolt in the Desert, the popular abridged version of Seven Pillars.
