BODLEIAN LIBRARY
CATALOGUS LIBRORUM IMPRESSORUM BIBLIOTHECÆ BODLEIANÆ IN ACADEMIA OXONIENSI. OXFORD: E THEATRO SHELDONIANO, 1738
2 volumes, folio (396 x 247mm.), frontispiece engraved portrait of Sir Thomas Bodley and others by M. Burghers, engraved view of the Bodleian on title-page, 26 engraved initials and head-pieces, errata leaf in volume 2, contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt in compartments, light spotting and browning, bindings slightly rubbed
This fourth printed catalogue of the Bodleian Library, edited by Bodley's librarian Robert Fysher (d. 1749), was based largely (and without acknowledgement) on the unpublished work of Thomas Hearne, who had been assistant librarian until he was ejected as a nonjurer in 1716 and worked extensively on the revision of Thomas Hyde's 1674 catalogue. Of the original 1000 copies, 442 were pulped in 1785 due to poor sales. THE MACCLESFIELD COPY.
PROVENANCE:
Armorial bookplate, blind stamp, and shelf numbers of the Earls of Macclesfield; The Library of the Earls of Macclesfield: Part 11, Sotheby's, London, 13 March 2008, lot 3887
