Description

HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

1864 - 1901

JANE AVRIL (D. 367; ADR. 354; W. P29)

Lithograph printed in colors, 1899, without the snake remarque, on linen-backed wove paper, printed by H. Stern, commissioned by Jane Avril, Paris, framed

sheet: 550 by 360 mm 21⅝ by 14¼ in

In 1899, Lautrec’s second to last poster was commissioned by a favorite of his many muses, Jane Avril herself. It is a masterful use of color and a compelling depiction of the full female form, however it was never displayed. The subject is standing still yet appears to be recoiling dramatically, her body bending in sync with the snake twisting up her dress.
