A. Radcliffe and P. Thornton, 'John Evelyn's Cabinet', Connoisseur, April 1978

The Victoria and Albert Museum preserves three bronze versions of the present composition: another cast of the relief in the present form and shape (inv. no. A.4-1975); a rectangular variant mounted on the inside of the central door of the John Evelyn cabinet (inv. no. W.24:1 to 24-1977); and a horizontal rectangular version mounted on the so-called Mead Cabinet (inv. no. A.29-1959). It is likely therefore that the present bronze, which was formerly in the celebrated collection of Robert von Hirsch, was made in Fanelli's workshop for mounting on a similar cabinet. Representing Orpheus playing and singing to the animals, it is one of the sculptor's most attractive compositions.
