Description

A MUSICIAN WITH A HARP AND BAGPIPE BENEATH A TREE, PERSIA, QAJAR, MID-19TH CENTURY

gouache heightened with gold on paper, with an attribution to Muhammad Zaman written near the tree and Zindeh b. Ahmad written on the border

painting: 14.5 by 8cm.

leaf: 29.5 by 20cm.

Christie’s London, 11 April 2008, lot 109.

An inscription near the tree attributes this painting to Muhammed Zaman, a Safavid artist who travelled both to Italy and later Mughal India and who was deeply influenced by European painting techniques. The architectural panorama on the horizon as well as the style of painting leaves on the tree above the musician recalls a scene signed by Muhammad Zaman and sold in these rooms, 11 July 1966, lot 31.
