Description
A MONUMENTAL CANTAGALLI IZNIK-STYLE POTTERY TWO-HANDLED VASE, ITALY, CIRCA 1880
decorated in cobalt blue, blue, green manganese and black outlines, decorated with typical Iznik composite floral blossom and a lobed medallion, featuring quadrupeds and a cock, drill hole to centre of foot, with Cantagalli cockerel mark, with collection number 'L14,57' crossed out, with ring stand for base, two lug handles

An important Iznik dish now in the British museum, which places a lion in the centre of the decoration (inv. no.G. 1983.123), could have been the model from which the current design was inspired. A similar Iznik-style Cantagalli style jar is published in G. Conti, La Maiolica Cantagalli e le Manifatture Ceramiche Fiorentine, Cassa di Risparmio die Firenze, 1990, p.101.
