A KÜTAHYA BLUE AND WHITE CIRCULAR PILGRIM'S POTTERY FLASK (MATARA), TURKEY, 18TH CENTURY


of circular, convex form, moulded with two raised concentric rings, the circumference applied with six suspension loops, straight protruding mouth and narrow foot, decorated in underglaze blue with black outlines, featuring stylised vegetal motifs


21cm. height; 18.5cm. diam.


This flask form appears with both blue and white and polychrome decoration. A comparable Kütahya flask, dated 1177 AH/1763 AD, from the Monastery of San Lazzaro in Venice, is published in Kürkman 2005, p.221. Two similar polychrome flasks are in the Suna and Inan Kirac collection (Kürkman 2006, p.218, no.278) and another in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no.777-1892). An example of similar form with polychrome decoration was sold in these rooms, 24 April 2012, lot 193.
