Anouska Hempel, Lady Weinberg. Acquired in London, 1988.
Originating in South India, this Jadai Nagam would have been worn by Bharatanatyam dancers (the dance of the maid-servants) along their long braid. Depicting Krishna dancing on the head of the king of snakes, Kaliya, this piece would hold strong ceremonial connotations. A similar Jadai Nagam, with its hanging terminal still intact, is in the Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva (inv. no.2504-106), illustrated in Krishnan and Kumar 2001, pp.96-97, no.137). A further similar piece sold in these rooms, 7 October 2015, lot 378.
