NUR AL-DIN 'ABD AL-RAHMAN JAMI (D.1492 AD), SUBHAT AL-ABRAR ('THE ROSARY OF THE DEVOUT'), COPIED BY MIR HUSAYN AL-HUSAYNI AL-HAJI, KNOWN AS MIR KULANGI, PERSIA, SAFAVID, 16TH CENTURY
Persian manuscript on coloured paper, 88 leaves, 12 lines to the page, written in nasta’liq in black ink, headings in gold nasta’liq within clouds, f.1b with a gold and polychrome heading, ff.87a-88a with lines written obliquely against a ground of polychrome floral scrolls, fine brown gilt-stamped binding, with gilt doublures

The scribe, Mir Husayn al-Husayni, known as Mir Kulangi, was from Nasaf in Transoxania, worked in Bukhara and was still alive in 1575-76. He is known as one of the seven pupils of Mir ‘Ali Haravi and the elegance of his hand was compared to that of his master. He worked at the court of the Shaybanid ruler ‘Abdallah II (r.1588-98) and, according to his signed works, was royal calligrapher (al-katib al-khaqani) and royal librarian (al-kitab-dar al-sultani). His recorded work includes manuscripts and calligraphic pages that are dated between 942 AH/1535-36 AD and 983 AH/1575-76 AD (M.Bayani, ahval va athar-e khosh-navisan, nasta’liq navisan, vol.1, 1345 sh, pp.164-6).
