AN IZNIK POTTERY JUG WITH HYACINTHS AND CARNATIONS, TURKEY, 16TH CENTURY


the earthenware body of baluster form on a low foot, with a slightly everted neck and loop handle, painted in an underglaze cobalt blue, green and relief red, outlines in black, with rows of alternating hyacinth and carnation stems, old exhibition label to underside of foot: 'Exposition Retrospective de Lyon, 186. Aynard', and old Sotheby's label

Ex-collection Édouard Aynard, Lyon (1837-1913).

Aynard was a notable patron of the arts, and a founding member of the Historical Museum of Fabrics of Lyon and the School of Commerce and Weaving. With a particular interest in Islamic art, he enriched the collections of the Museum of Lyon through generous donations, as well as chairing the commission of acquisitions and the board of directors. In 1913 he became an honorary member of the National Society of Fine Arts.
