Description
AN IZNIK POTTERY JUG WITH CLOUDS, TURKEY, CIRCA 1590-1600
the earthenware body of baluster form on a low foot, with a slightly everted neck and loop handle, painted in an underglaze cobalt blue, green and relief red with rows of clouds, outlined in black, the shoulder with undulating bands, old collector's label to underside of foot 'SI ho L9H'
18.6cm.
The naturalistic cloud design of the present jug can be traced back to the 's-cloud motif', which characterised a group of Iznik wares from the 1590s onwards (Atasoy and Raby 1989, p.259). Two pitchers with the same design, one of which is in the Hetjens Museum, Dusseldorf, inv. no.10423, are illustrated in ibid p.259, nos.555 and 557. A large jug with this motif was sold in these rooms, An Eye for Opulence: Art of the Ottoman Empire, 24 April 2012, lot 128.
