Description

A BIDRI SILVER-INLAID TRAY, INDIA, DECCAN, 18TH CENTURY

comprising twelve facets, silver-inlaid decoration with large composite floral sprays to body around a central flowerhead, on twelve short feet

31cm. diam.

Spink & Son, London, 1970s.

John Robert Alderman explains that "Bidri was often furnished in a four-object set, composed of the huqqa base, the ring, the chillam (fire cup), and a tray on which the huqqa rested" (Haidar and Sardar 2015, p.188). The examples published in Haidar and Sardar are all round whereas the faceted nature of this tray is more unusual.
