THEODORE ROOSEVELT

PROOF SPREAD FEATURING THE PHOTOGRAPHIC FRONTISPIECE OF ROOSEVELT IN HIS ROUGH RIDERS UNIFORM, SIGNED "THEODORE ROOSEVELT," FROM BIG GAME HUNTING IN THE ROCKIES AND ON THE GREAT PLAINS. NEW YORK: G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS (THE KNICKERBOCKER PRESS), 1899

2-page spread (11 x 16 in.; 280 x 406 mm), photographic portrait with signature below, and additional manuscript "T" at lower left, photograph by George G. Rockwood, copyright 1898, pencil instructions in another hand ("Please sign about where we have written your name, that is inside the plate mark (level). If, however, there is not sufficient space for you to do this effectively, please sign about where we have placed the two stars." Title-page blocked out in pencil on right side "Title page to be printed here." Addressed to George Haven Putnam, 27 West 23rd Street, New York City on the verso. Horizontal and vertical creases, some handling wear, small spots of adhesive residue to verso.

An interesting glimpse into turn-of-the-century publishing processes, featuring a striking portrait of Roosevelt

Title page and frontispiece portrait sent to Roosevelt by the publishers for Roosevelt's signature. The "T" in the margin evidently written by the author, would indicate he had been testing his pen before placing his signature under the portrait, as instructed by G. P. Putnam's Sons in the two-page spread.
