CALVIN COOLIDGE
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("CALVIN COOLIDGE") AS VICE PRESIDENT, TO MONSIGNOR O'CONNELL, ANTICIPATING A VISIT
One page (9 1/8 x 7 in.; 232 x 178 mm) on a bifolium of blue-embossed Vice President's Chamber letterhead, Washington, 5 December 1921; very lightly creased at horizontal fold, two neat spindle-file holes punched at top margin.
Coolidge "Hastily," invites Monsignor O'Connell to meet with him in Washington: "We are delighted to hear from you and hope to see you soon. I do not know when the next open conference will be but that will not interfere with the pleasure of seeing you." Though he was a lifelong Congregationalist, Coolidge learned of the political influence of Cardinal William Henry O'Connell, Archbishop of Boston, during his long climb through elective offices in Massachusetts, and was always accommodating to Catholic clergy.
Autograph letters by Vice President Coolidge are exceedingly uncommon: American Book Prices Current cites only four since 1975 and none at all for the last fifteen years.
