Robert Crone received his early training from the portrait painter Robert Hunter, but soon started specialising in painting landscapes, in which he achieved great success. In 1755 he travelled to Rome and briefly studied under Richard Wilson. Crone exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1772 and 1778; these paintings were usually described as Claudean and were mostly of Italian subjects.
We are grateful to William Laffan for endorsing the attribution to Robert Crone following first-hand inspection.
